On Course is a mentored young choreographers’ project for tertiary students. You get an opportunity to choreograph, develop and present a short work, with two public performances. A panel will select the participating choreographers from the applications received. QL2 Dance will support you by timetabling choreographers, dancers, time and space; mentoring; publicity; administrative support; rehearsal space and performance venue.
On Course is a great opportunity to break out of the constraints of study, and instead to work in a non-assessed, critical but supportive environment. You can build skills; develop and test choreographic ideas; present work to ACT audiences; and work with dancers and choreographers from around Australia to build your national dance network.
On Course is about choreographic development — for you and the dancers. You need to be ready to develop your work: to welcome engagement and critical feedback during development from myself as Artistic Director and project leader Adelina Larsson; and to respond to performance notes positively. You need to commit to the full development time: 6 rehearsals of 3 hours, with at least 2 in the Theatre; as well the initial workshop, tech rehearsals, and performances. Costumes, props, makeup and lighting or other effects need to be kept to a minimum: there are many works and not a lot of time. If any of these requirements are a problem, and you are still keen to participate, contact me!
Your work can be up to 8 minutes: no longer. It may be a reworking or extension of an original composition made for uni, or a new piece you develop here.
If you have dancers who want to come to Canberra to work with you, that’s great! Depending on your request, we may allocate other tertiary students or senior dancers from our Quantum Leap ensemble. We expect that you will also be available to work as a dancer in one other piece. Some dancers are asked to be in many pieces, and this becomes very difficult. I have final say on who is in which group, and any changes.
This is a subsidised project so there are no project fees. You are expected to cover your own accommodation and travel costs.
- Project meeting and workshop Sunday 1 December
- Rehearsals/development Monday 2 – Friday 13 December
- Technical rehearsals 13 & 14 December
- Performances 14 December & 15 December at QL2 Dance’s Theatre
We will do a massive juggling act to try to satisfy everyone’s requests for dancers, without creating a totally crazy schedule for anyone. To make this process easier, we expect you to be available for any of the time slots listed below.
Your rehearsal schedule will include 6 x 3 hour time slots for your own work; and another 6 x 3 hour time slots for each work you are dancing in. So, the minimum time commitment is 18 hours per piece, plus the introduction workshop, technical days and performances.
