Dean talks about not talking about creating new dance

Canberra-based but peripatetic dance artist Dean Cross takes up two Curated Residencies at QL2 Dance this month. In the first, he is working on the very first  research and development phase for a new contemporary dance work choreographed and performed by himslef, and local dancer Jack Riley.

“Conceptually the work will be looking at our similarities and differences as people who are separated by ten years, whilst finding both in a shared and non-shared physical language.”

Liz Lea: dance & science, cockatoos & turnout, and InFlight

I have been running a series of Dance and Science workshops with Inspiring Australia based at CSIRO Discovery.

In the first lecture on 2 February, I talked at CSIRO about the research into the Red Tailed Black cockatoo, and the choreography being developed with Tammi Gissell for her solo Magnificus Magnificus. We previewed the work at the launch of the Centenary of Canberra Indigenous program,  and will also present at Dance Massive. QL2 Dance have supported the work with a grant of space in August last year, and also some days this year which has been wonderful. The work premieres alongside my solo Kapture in October at The Street Theatre as part of their Made in Canberra season. Continue reading

The first sewing bee

On Sunday April 1st the gentle hum of sewing machines and over-lockers could be heard from outside the QL2 building. We had our first of two sewing bees, where we were making denim shorts, three-quarter pants and full-length pants to be worn in some of the ‘Me Right Now’ dance pieces. The dark blue denim pants will be worn with colour-blocked tops for the show.

Our first production for the year ‘Me Right Now’ will be on from 9–12 May at The Playhouse, Canberra Theatre. Through this site I will be blogging about the process of taking the performance to the stage, and you will be able to follow our progress as we move towards production week.
