“Frame Works”: dance installation at National Portrait Gallery, Canberra
“Frame Works”: dance installation at National Portrait Gallery, Canberra
3 days only. Free entry.

Frame Works is a unique series of new dance works by young artists exploring portraiture, identity and framing across the Visual Arts and Dance worlds.

These pieces are each a direct response to works from within the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, as selected by the individual dance artists. From these starting points, each of these dance pieces will embrace the biographical information that is provided about the identities of both the subject and the portrait artist, as well as exploring the broader notions of “identity”, “depiction”, and “portraiture”.

Under the combined title of Frame Works, these pieces will be presented in a range of evocative sites within the Gallery. Some of the works will last only a few minutes and will be performed in direct response to the presence of viewers, while others will run in a “durational loop” for 60 minutes at a time.

Over a four-week intensive period, the Soft Landing 2 mentoring program (at the QL2 Centre for Youth Dance) has been providing seven tertiary dance graduates with the opportunity to enrich and expand their experiences in choreography, specifically focussing on the “choreographer in solo practice”. Working in collaboration with staff from the National Portrait Gallery, each of these young dance artists is creating a stand-alone solo performance work.

Associate Director at QL2, project leader Brian Lucas, says “Soft Landing 2 will provide support and mentorship to young artists who are seeking to explore solo work. The artists are focussing on the dual territories of biographical and autobiographical creation and performance, using external portraiture as a starting point to explore the ways in which individual artistic response and creation/performance can enhance and enrich the Australian Dance and Visual Arts landscape”.

Soft Landing is a project of QL2 Centre for Youth Dance in Canberra, in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery. This project has been supported by the Australia Council, the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body.
