Application form at the end of this page
On Course is a choreographers’ project for tertiary students: to develop your artistic voice, leadership, and audience relationship. You get an opportunity to develop a short work, with two public performances. QL2 Dance will support you: by timetabling choreographers, dancers, time, rehearsal space and performance venue; with production and marketing; and by challenging and guiding you. On Course is for students at university or university-level courses (including equivalent courses overseas, and NAISDA). You can be in any year. A panel will select the participating choreographers from the applications received.
On Course is a great opportunity to break out of the constraints of study, to work in a non-assessed, critical but supportive environment. You can develop and test choreographic and theatrical ideas and processes; and work with dancers and choreographers from around Australia to build your dance network. If you don’t want to choreograph, but want to dance in someone else’s work, please also put in an application. See the end of this page.
On Course is about choreographic development — for you and the dancers — and we encourage you to consider the work that you create in the context of a paying public audience.
You need to be ready for challenge and change: to welcome engagement, critical feedback and performance notes throughout, from Alison Plevey as Provocateur, and from Ruth Osborne as Artistic Director. As Producer, Ruth will also where necessary make the final call on what goes in front of the audience.
You need to commit to the full process and time: an initial group workshop, six rehearsals of 3 hours, choreographers meetup, in-progress showing, tech rehearsals, performances, and debrief. Costumes, props, lighting and other resources need to be kept to a minimum: there are many works and not a lot of time. If your university commitments mean you can’t be here in the first week — contact us!
Your work can be up to 8 minutes: no longer. It may be a reworking or extension of an original composition made for uni or elsewhere, or a new piece you develop here.
If you have dancers who want to come to Canberra to work with you, that’s great! Depending on your request, we may allocate other tertiary students or senior dancers from our Quantum Leap pre-tertiary ensemble. We expect that you will also be available to work as a dancer in another piece. Some dancers are asked to be in many pieces, so we have final say on who is in which group, and any changes.
This is a highly subsidised project — the only direct cost to you is a $70 registration fee if you are accepted. You will need to cover your own accommodation and travel costs.
