“I have been involved with QL2 for a number of years now as a dancer and now have the pleasure of returning to make a section of the work in the Chaos project. I danced myself at QL2 from 2009 to 2013, performing in both junior and senior projects.
‘Its such a rewarding experience to be able to make a work with such talented dancers and young artists.’
Since then I have been studying at the Victorian College of the Arts, completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. I graduated last year (2016), and have begun dancing in projects in Australia and creating and presenting my own work in both Melbourne and Canberra.
I was asked to choreograph for Not like the others in the middle of the year and could not have been more happy about it. The opportunity to make work with the company where I began dancing was very enticing. Working with the 47 young dancers has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. The standard of work ethic and talent in the room was a pleasant surprise. There are a number who could go very far in dance — it will be exciting to keep our eye on over the next couple of years.
‘Their discipline and creativity is incredible to be a part of, and seeing their confidence and dancing ability grow is just as important as the level of work we are creating.’
Making the work has been more efficient than I had expected and has been enjoyable and rewarding. I hope people come to the show to see the high standard of dancing and choreography throughout the whole work, and support the great work QL2 continues to do for the Canberra community. I would like to thank Alison Plevey, Ruth Osborne, Gary Barnes and QL2 for the opportunity to contribute to Not like the others.
Not like the others: A new 1-hour contemporary dance work, developed in collaboration with the QL2 junior ensemble (ages 8–16) plus some older, experienced dancers. Created by QL2 Dance’s Acting Artistic Director Alison Plevey with choreographers Steve Gow and Jack Riley. Read more…
