Ed: Caitlin Comerford is of one three choreographers in QL2’s EAT!, performing 14 & 15 October 2016 in Canberra..
I have been fortunate enough to spend the last couple of weeks with QL2 Dance in Canberra, creating EAT!, the 2016 “Chaos” project. Working with this incredible team I am reminded of the power and tenacity of our young people. I am so inspired by their energy, charisma and enthusiasm, and cannot wait to see them rock out at Theatre 3 next week.
Just over two months ago I took on the role of Artistic Director at Stompin, a youth dance company based in Launceston, Tasmania. I am over the moon about my new position and so excited to see what the future holds. I am passionate about youth dance in Australia and a lot of this stems from my experience with QL2. This organisation has been the backbone of my career in dance; from the moment I walked through the doors as an uncoordinated teen, the experience and training steering me to study dance at university, providing me with the foundation I needed to be an independent artist, offering me one of my first professional gigs, and now as they mentor me in my new role as A.D. QL2 is an inspiration and a vital component of the wider Australian dance landscape.
What seems really special about this project is recognising that I am a part of a bigger picture. I am working not only with QL2’s Artist Director, Ruth Osborne but also with Jamie Winbank and Jack Ziesing. The three of us grew up dancing together at QL2 and it feels a little bit magic being back in the same space, with the same people, just in a different role. On the flip side, as a choreographer and a teacher, I know without a doubt that in few years I will be heading to Carriageworks in Sydney or Malthouse in Melbourne or perhaps the Playhouse here in Canberra to watch QL2 alumni perform. These young people are so talented and so well equipped to be the next generation of professional contemporary dancers.
