QL2 Dance’s renowned Quantum Leap ensemble in “Connected” at Canberra Playhouse: a triple-bill of diverse pieces, created in collaboration with the dancers by renowned choreographers Sara Black (Chunky Move, Punchdrunk), Kristina Chan (ADT), and physical theatre company Lingua Franca (Brisbane Powerhouse, Wirksworth Festival UK.)
Connected investigates the power that connections can have on the individual, and provides a unique reflection of our own lives – connecting out to those looking in. It explores connections through our skin, connections with the natural world, and how strength and empowerment affect our connections with each other.
Quantum Leap is QL2‘s flagship contemporary youth dance ensemble. They are respected nationally and internationally, collaborated with the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland in 2016, and represented Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival.
This diverse group of auditioned dancers from Canberra and the region will be joined by dancers from Thailand, Perth and regional NSW, presenting works of depth and clarity far beyond their years.
Sara Black (Chunky Move, Punchdrunk) has made Act of Contact:
“the myriad messages we receive through our skin … a conversation and understanding without words”
Kristina Chan (ADT, Force Majeure) is working on Infinite:
“connections: how we live, breathe and embody nature”
Lingua Franca are physical theatre creators. They will make All our might:
“In an age of empowerment, action and aggression, what is strength?”
What the critics say — some quotes from reviews of previous productions”
“…tight in execution… energy, strength, and grace surprising in dancers so young.”
John P. Harvey, Stage Whispers
“a compelling example of the use of dance to illuminate difficult themes.”
Bill Stephens, CityNews
“…moving and engaging. It impressed with its high production values, innovative choreography, and versatile and athletic dancing! …”

QL2 Dance: who we are
We run challenging, diverse and rigorous youth dance programs. Our Artistic Director, Ruth Osborne, is passionate about extending youth dance practice beyond training, beyond ‘young people dancing’, to immersive, creative, ongoing dance experiences. She brings together community and professional practice and presents quality performances to diverse audiences. We develop the next generation of dance-makers, and contribute to a passionate, caring, diverse society.
Quantum Leap is our auditioned, selective youth dance ensemble. It is a vibrant, demanding, supportive and structured environment for young people to gain an understanding of choreographic processes, develop choreographic literacy and work together to create sophisticated productions that wrestle with big ideas. These high-quality works emerge from collaborative processes: the dancers form part of a creative team with professional choreographers, composers and filmmakers.
