QL2’s ‘Hit the floor together’ shortlisted for Australian Dance Award

ADA-logo-rgbWe are excited to announce that we have been shortlisted for a 2014 Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth or Community Dance for Hit the Floor Together. The Australian Dance Awards  recognise and honour professional Australian dance artists who have made an outstanding contribution to Australian dance.

Hit the Floor Together was presented at Canberra Playhouse in July-August 2013 by QL2 Dance, bringing together local dancers with visiting Indigenous dancers from NAISDA and elsewhere. 45 indigenous and non-indigenous dancers, aged between 13-25, worked with choreographers Daniel Riley McKinley, Dean Cross and Deon Hastie to break down stereotypes, experiment with form, and ultimately collaborate and learn from each other.

Also, congratulations to QL2 Dance alumni:

  • Jack Zeising nominated for OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE DANCER for When Time Stops [Expressions Dance Company].
  • Sam Young-Wright  in the cast of De Novo [Sydney Dance Company] nominated for OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A COMPANY;
  • James Batchelor in the cast of Stephanie Lake’s Aorta [Chunky Move] nominated for OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN CHOREOGRAPHY and OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A COMPANY.
  • Kathleen Lott in Rochelle Carmichael’s dance film Plucked, nominated for OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN DANCE ON FILM/NEW MEDIA.

 Hit the Floor Together was “a powerful and engaging work of contemporary dance, and reflected the incredible young dance talent fostered in Canberra through the tireless work of the team at QL2 Dance. It was also a work which demonstrated the power of collaboration in artistic practice and its ability to bring people together, no matter their age, cultural background, or level of experience.”  Vanessa Wright, BMA Magazine http://www.bmamag.com/articles/exhibitionist-review/20130813-hit-the-floor-together/

“Young performers reach into what they can’t yet imagine; emerging choreographers get to stretch their limbs. And sometimes one gets to see both choreographer and performers spread some surprisingly eloquent wings.” Zsuzsanna Soboslay, RealTime Arts http://www.realtimearts.net/article/issue116/11299

A short video excerpt here:

The Awards are judged by a panel of dance professionals representing many different sectors of the industry from all over Australia, following an open public nominations process. Chair of the Judging Panel, leading performer and industry icon Robina Beard OAM said the quality of entrants in this year’s awards was inspirational. “Australian dance is in a fine place. The talent—both new and established—in our industry is truly outstanding and very encouraging for the future of dance in this country. These annual Awards are a wonderful way to celebrate and acknowledge our thriving sector and its exceptional artists.”

The awards will be presented at a celebration at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday 9 November 2014.

We would like to congratulate everyone shortlisted — and also all the amazing dance artists who for one reason or another did not make this list.
